Whatever the obstacles, Ayla's inventive spirit produces new ways to lessen the difficulties of daily life: searching for wild edibles to make delicious meals, experimenting with techniques to ease the long journeys the Zelandoni must take, honing her skills as a healer and a leader. The two participate in hunts to provide food, in travels to Summer Meetings for decision making, and in social activities. The wisdom that Ayla gained from her struggles as an orphaned child, alone in a hostile environment, strengthens her as she moves closer to leadership of the Zelandonia.Īyla and Jondalar's first priority is the care for their golden-haired child, Jonayla, and the well-being of their amazing animals, Wolf, Whinney, Racer, and Gray. They are faced with new challenges, not just the ordinary trials of sheer survival, but the complications posed by many groups of people who need to live and work together. Ayla, one of the most remarkable and beloved heroines in contemporary fiction, continues to explore the world and the people around her with curiosity, insight, and above all, courage.Īs the story opens, Ayla, Jondalar, and their infant daughter, Jonayla are welcomed by the Zelandonii, but problems arise. Auel brings the ice-age epic Earth's Children series to an extraordinary conclusion.

I just really love this world and I was so happy to spend a few more minutes in it. She loves Adam so much and let me tell you, I can relate. She’s so strange in such an endearing way. But here, in her novella, Opal was perfect. I was too focused on Blue and all her Raven Boys and all of the terrible and wonderful things that happened to them. The journey follows an emotionally fraught path filled with psychics, magic, and the unexpected, as we follow a journey filled with lush descriptions and painfully. Little did I know, there was a novella about Opal, Ronan’s dream girl! Opal features a few short glimpses into the lives of Ronan Lynch and Adam Parrish after the events of The Raven King.ĭuring the actual Raven Cycle, I didn’t care that much about Opal. Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Cycle subverts a stereotype associated with LGBTQ people in a novel that maintains a sense of home while also subverting a widely held stereotype. I’m not entirely sure of the last time I devoured a series so quickly (it was probably some Tamora Pierce when I was in middle school), but I felt legitimately heartbroken when I finished The Raven King and the series had come to a close. An enchanting story from Maggie Stiefvater featuring Opal, Ronan, and Adam from her bestselling Raven Cycle, taking place after the events of The Raven King. I’m really picky about YA stories, but there’s been a few that I’ve loved over the years. I’ve read several of Rachel Vincent’s adult stories, but never a YA from her. I went into this book not realizing it was a YA story. Red Wolf is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood by Rachel Vincent. Adele is one of a long line of guardians, women who are able to change into wolves and who are tasked with the job of protecting their village while never letting any of the villagers know of their existence.īut when following her calling means abandoning the person she loves, the future she imagined for herself, and her values she must decide how far she is willing to go to keep her neighbors safe. Like every person who grows up in Oakvale she has been told to steer clear of the woods unless absolutely necessary.īut unlike her neighbors in Oakvale, Adele has a very good reason for going into the woods. This high stakes, pacey reimagining of Little Red Riding Hood is perfect for fans of Stephanie Garber and Megan Spooner.įor as long as sixteen-year-old Adele can remember the village of Oakvale has been surrounding by the dark woods-a forest filled with terrible monsters that light cannot penetrate. Amazon, Audible, Audiobook, Barnes & Noble, Apple The book, which marked the beginning of Douglass’s career as an impassioned writer, journalist, and orator for the abolitionist cause, reveals the terrors he faced as a slave, the brutalities of his owners and overseers, and his harrowing escape to the North. In 1845, just seven years after his escape from slavery, the young Douglass published this powerful account of his life as a slave and his triumph over oppression. It is exceptional.”-Nancy Hewitt, Distinguished Professor Emerita, Rutgers University The autobiography of Frederick Douglass (1818–1895), Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, is widely regarded as a classic of American nineteenth-century history, of African-American studies, and of literature. There was no way she would give him the satisfaction of an emotional outburst. Telling her she threw a tantrum and calling her a loose end was his method of goading an outraged response from her. You made a lot of angry threats during your tantrum before you left, and I have too much at stake right now to leave loose ends.” “Of course I’m keeping track of you, Lila. Could he be responsible for the text messages and the incident yesterday? Would he stoop so low as to hire a thug to frighten his daughter into running back to the fold? “You’re having me watched?” She worked to keep her voice level, and free from anger. I know you have a busy schedule, what with all the riding on backs of motorcycles you’ve been doing lately, so let’s skip the small talk.” I assume there is a purpose for this unexpected phone call beyond your inquiry into our wellbeing. The decision to move away from home had been difficult for Lila’s mother to accept, and while she was just as guilty as the wannabe governor in Lila’s eyes, she had a bit of a softer spot for her mother. How are you? How’s mom?” There wasn’t any point in engaging in a battle right from the start. The childish gesture made her feel marginally better. Lila held the phone away from her ear, and stuck her tongue out at it. Lila rolled her eyes at her own spinelessness, picked up the phone and located her father’s cell number in her contacts. It’s a risky move under any circumstances, but Jax and his trusted crew aboard the Far Ranger, including the irrepressible droid I-Five, are prepared to pit their combat skills and their vessel’s firepower against all Imperial threats-except the one Jax fears most. Now he’s taking on his most critical mission: transporting a valued Whiplash leader, targeted for assassination, from Coruscant to safety on a distant world. But not Jax Pavan, who’s been steadily striking blows against the Empire-as a lone guerrilla fighter and a valued partner of Whiplash, a secret Coruscant-based resistance group.
